Post-Doctoral Fellow, School of Planning, University of Waterloo, 2022-2023
PhD, School of Community and Regional Planning, 2022, University of British Columbia MA, Recreation and Leisure Studies, 2017, University of Waterloo My research examines the structural and societal systems that impede the access to safe and inclusive environments. In particular, I investigate three complementary areas: (i) equitable access and participation in active transportation, (ii) placemaking initiatives to promote social connectedness and physical activity, and (iii) community engagement techniques for equitable involvement in public policy. I use qualitative methodologies necessary to uncover deficiencies in our existing social systems and enable access to safe, environmentally-friendly healthy-living practices.
Currently, I am working as a post-doctoral fellow with Dr. Brian Doucet at the University of Waterloo in the School of Planning. I have been working on the Hamilton Neighbourhood Change Research project aimed at understanding neighbourhood change along the LRT corridor in Hamilton, Ontario. This information will help planners, policymakers and non-profits develop strategies to create inclusive communities along the LRT route. My other project, Everybody Bikes, is to better understand the experiences, behaviours, and attitudes towards cycling through the eyes of people who have lived in both the Netherlands and Canada in order to enhance cycling planning and policy for Canadian cities. Understanding how cycling culture and experiences change from one country to another will help planners and policymakers develop truly bicycle-friendly cities within Canada. I am also the creator and host of the award-winning podcast Dense City, where we discuss articles and books on the topic of cities with their academic authors. In 2021, Dense City won first place in the American Planning Association’s Transportation Planning Division small grant competition for increasing the accessibility of academic knowledge. |
